The sugar-sweetened beverage tax is all about choice for the public. The idea behind it is that it will help encourage the public to make healthier choices and to not overindulge on unhealthy products that will cost all taxpayers by increasing healthcare costs to our businesses.

I agree that parents should be involved in educating their children to make healthier choices as well, however, sugar-sweetened beverages are legally sold to children of all ages. Any keiki with less than a dollar in change can go into a convenience store and purchase a sugary soda at a lower price than that child could purchase a 100% fruit drink or a bottle of water. Parents can't possibly monitor their teenagers every hour of the day to keep them from purchasing things legally. Increasing the price on the sugar-sweetened beverages (they are cheaper because the federal government subsidizes the corn syrup and sugar in them) through a state tax will encourage teens to purchase diet beverages, or naturally-sweetened beverages that offer nutritional value. Unless you are willing to ban the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages to minors than parents can't be held entirely responsible, especially when the beverage industry targets them with hundreds of millions of dollars in marketing and advertising messages.
