I agree that parents should be involved in educating their children to make healthier choices as well, however, sugar-sweetened beverages are legally sold to children of all ages. Any keiki with less than a dollar in change can go into a convenience store and purchase a sugary soda at a lower price than that child could purchase a 100% fruit drink or a bottle of water. Parents can’t possibly monitor their teenagers every hour of the day to keep them from purchasing things legally. Increasing the price on the sugar-sweetened beverages (they are cheaper because the federal government subsidizes the corn syrup and sugar in them) through a state tax will encourage teens to purchase diet beverages, or naturally-sweetened beverages that offer nutritional value. Unless you are willing to ban the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages to minors than parents can’t be held entirely responsible, especially when the beverage industry targets them with hundreds of millions of dollars in marketing and advertising messages.
